It was founded in 1524 by the great tsar Vasily III Ioanovich in memory of the capture of Smolensk. First prioress of this convent, Helena, had a nickname: Devochkina. They believe that therefore convent was named Devitchy. Here stayed Boris Godunov awaiting for Russian throne, which he obtained later. Evdokia Fedorovna the Peter´s spouse lived here for four years. 15.30-17.00 | Visit to Peter and Paul´Fortress. The small island in the mouth of the Neva river was chosen by Peter the Great to lay foundation of St. Petersburg. Peter and Paul´s Fortress is the first structure in St. Petersburg, designed by Domenico Trezzini. Rising high above the Neva the golden slim spire of Peter and Paul´s Cathedral surmounted with an angel dominates the city. Having built as a military fort the fortress never participated in any military action and soon came to be used as a political prison. Inside the Cathedral there are tombstones of all Russian Emperors. In 1998 the remains of the Russian Emperor Nicholas II, his family and Entourages were buried in the Peter and Paul´s Cathedral. |

From the Great Palace of Peterhof three monumental cascading fountains (one of them comprising the famous Samson ) lead us to the Lower Park, a real masterpiece in itself, with 173 fountains on its ground. |

15.00-17.00 | Walking tour & shopping Nevsky Prospekt The city´s main thoroughfare is borne across a series of islands: Admi-ralteysky Island — from Admiralteysky Prospect to the Moika River, Kazansky Island — from the Moika to the Griboyedov Canal, Spassky Island — from the Griboyedov Canal to the Fontanka River, and Bezymyanny Island — from the Fontanka to the Obvodny Canal, finishing up at Alexander Nevsky Square. It contains some splendid buildings — Gostiny Dvor, the Mikhailovsky Palace (The Russian Museum), the Alexandrinsky Theatre, Kazan Cathedral and the Public Library. Today it is one of the most beautiful streets in the world, containing the city´s best hotels, shops, restaurants and clubs. The Palace-and-Park ensemble of Tsarskoye Selo - a former country residence of Russian emperors - is a fascinating monument of the world´s architectural and gardening arts of the XVIII-XIX centuries. Its three parks occupy the area of 600 ha, on which over 100 architectural constructions rise - from magnificent palaces and grand monuments to intimate pavilions and park sculptures. The compositional centre of Tsarskoselsky ensemble is Catherine´s Palace, containing exquisite decorative objects, furniture, Russian and Western-European paintings, unique collections of porcelain, amber, arms, decorative bronze, sculptures etc. Nowadays, the collection of the museum Tsarskoye Selo numbers about 20 000 items. |
